Anode

An anode is an electrode that attracts electrons from an electrolyte or a vacuum and where oxidation processes thus take place. As a battery component it is negative in polarity. Its positive counterpart electrode is called a cathode.

Asynchronous motor

Today asynchronous motors are the most frequently used type of electric motor. They consist of a stator plus a ‘passive’ rotor, and as they do not need brushes or sliding contacts they suffer very little wear. Frequency converters are used to control the speed, which for design reasons is always a few percentage points (this difference being called the slip) lower than the rotating magnetic field around the stator, or below the related synchronous speed (thus the name ‘asynchronous’). It can incidentally also be used as a generator.
